This week on Author on the Couch,

I’m conducting a 2nd session with

Brinda Berry.

*Sometimes one session just isn’t enough!

Here’s a link to Brinda’s first session in case you missed it–and you shouldn’t miss it: Author on the Couch: Brinda Berry.

GIVEAWAY! Brinda is giving away two ebooks to two lucky people who comment on this blog!

Me: Have there been any big changes in your life since our last session? Tell us about them.

Brinda: It’s been one year since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Surgery wasn’t a lot of fun, but I do feel lucky to be alive. I have quarterly visits with my oncologist and everything is going well.

It really puts procrastination into perspective. Don’t do it! I know every day is a gift. Wow. That got serious so fast.

Me: Cancer is serious. But you’re right–there’s nothing like it to show you what your true priorities are.

Which of your characters are you most like? Why?

Brinda Berry: From a recent book, I’d have to say Leo of The Beauty of Lies. He’s a writer and blogger. He’s driven and serious about his career. He’s also very private about his personal life. He has a hard time letting the public know everything about him. I can identify with that.

A review of THE FICTION OF FOREVER

I am smitten once again with Berry and her beautiful imagination and memorable characters. I will gladly read anything this author has to offer. Wonderful, intriguing and charming…THE FICTION OF FOREVER is absolutely reread worthy. And that doesn’t happen very often with me. 5 Stars!

Me: Who is your book boyfriend? Why?

Brinda: I’d have to say it’s always the hero of the book I’m writing. If I’m not in love with my characters, why should you be?

As a reader, my favorite books feature tortured heroes and funny guys.

Me: Name a writing pet peeve of yours. Why does it bug you?

Brinda: I cringe when I read purple prose and unauthentic dialogue. Maybe this is why I prefer New Adult and Contemporary Romance.TFoF

Me: What’s the most painful rejection or review you’ve ever received? How did you get over it?

Brinda: I don’t let reviews bother me anymore. Last year, I did receive an agent rejection that drove a stake through my heart. I pulled the stake out by morning.

Me: Yeah–cause you’re the only one who can pull it out!

Tell me about your New Adult Contemporary Romance THE FICTION OF FOREVER–book 2 of the Stand by Me novels.

Brinda:

He’s got a second chance at the one who got away—but it’s on national television, and she’s calling the shots.

Kiley Vanderbilt wasn’t just fuel for Gunner’s teenage dreams about the curvy pageant queen. She was the one who got away.

Until now.

When Gunner returns to Nashville, his high school fantasy in heels challenges him to accept a spot on the dating reality show Forever.

And although the challenger happens to be show hostess Kiley, he’s going to prove once and for all that she wants more. One white-hot kitchen encounter isn’t nearly enough to quench his thirst.

But when Kiley—untouchable, jeans-tightening Kiley—proclaims she’s unwilling to compromise the show’s integrity, he vows to throw a twist of his own into her behind-the-scenes plotting.

That’s going way, way off Kiley’s script.

Giving in to Gunner would torpedo her plans to prove to her manipulating ex-fiancé and her producer daddy that she has more on her shoulders than pancake and hairspray. She must make him play by her rules on camera in spite of his sexy whispers behind the scenes.

Especially when a social media shitstorm brews on the horizon.

Fourteen days of filming. Six camera crews. And a minefield of hidden cameras. This time, no one’s getting away.

Me: Share a favorite paragraph or two from your newest release. Why do you love this paragraph? What makes it special to you?

Brinda: I really enjoy writing the funny scenes in my books. This one is humorous and tender at the same time. My hero does something purely to please the heroine. I love that!  The setting is a carnival.

“Get me off this thing.” I close my eyes and hope I won’t vomit on the people below me. For some mechanical reason, we’ve been stuck at the top of the Ferris wheel o’ death for the past hour. It’s dark and Kiley insists on swinging her feet in a pendulum motion.

“Isn’t this great?” She sighs happily. “Look down there!”

I crack open one eye and regret it. She points below us at a tool belt-wearing guy who climbs several spokes of the wheel.

“Hey,” she says to me.

“What.”

“Put your arm around me. I’m cold,” she says around a smile.

“I can’t move.”

She snorts. “You should’ve told me you’re really scared of heights.”

“I told you I didn’t want to ride.”

“Not the same thing. I thought you didn’t feel like it. I thought you’d have fun once we were going.”

“Which part of this is fun? I completely missed whenever that happened.” I lift one finger at a time from the metal bar and attempt to lift my arm without causing us to move. I plan to put my arm slowly around her and everything will be good.

She immediately swings her feet and we rock back and forth.

“Kiley,” I warn.

“What? Scaredy,” she responds.

“Paybacks are—”

“Hell. I know, I know. You’ve said it plenty of times.” She laughs low and diabolically. The motion vibrates our seat.

“No laughing.” I inhale and open my eyes, looking straight ahead.

“Oh my God!” a voice below us squeals. “Did you see that guy almost fall?”

I fling my arm around Kiley and hold on for dear life. “I’m going to die. Right here on a metal paperclip four billion feet in the air.”

Kiley’s laughter distracts me. She wipes tears from her eyes. “It wouldn’t be so…” snort. “…funny,” another snort. “If you weren’t this big, fearless type.”

“Everyone’s afraid of something.”
