This week on Author on the Couch,

I conduct a session with

Terri Reed.

GIVEAWAY! Terri is giving away a copy of her inspirational romantic suspense novel RANSOM to one person who comments.

Me: Tell me about an experience that had a profound impact on your life.

Terri: When I was eighteen I was part the American Field Service and spent three months with a family in Italy. This was the first time I’d away from home alone and it was both scary and delightful. This time in Italy wetted my appetite for travel and gave me confidence to explore the world.

Me: What personality trait of yours helps you most as an author?

Terri: I would say determination. According to merriam-webster determination is a quality that makes you continue trying to do or achieve something that is difficult. I would categorize writing as something difficult.

Me: Amen. So often people who don’t write have the misconceptions that writing is easy. Easy! They don’t understand just how hard it is to get words on the page, make them sound good, then try to get those words published.

What personality trait of yours hinders you most as an author?

Terri: Self-doubt is a horrible companion at times and something I struggle with often.

Me: Self-doubt hinders many authors. Me included. And many many many of the authors who’ve been on this couch.

What was your high point as a writer?

Terri: The day I received the call was the highest point. The morning my cell phone rang and this lovely lady said she was from Harlequin and wanted to buy my book is still the best day. I was so excited but I had to call her back. I was driving my son to pre-school.

Me: What was your low point as a writer—a time when questioned your path as a writer?

Terri: Back in the beginning when I was starting out I entered my first contest and one of the judges was extremely harsh in her critique of my writing. I don’t know that I was ready to give up but I was ready to scrap that particular book. I set it aside for a while but then I went back to it and continued to work on it until it sold. That book was the first book, Love Comes Home, that I sold to Love Inspired.

ransomMe: Which of your characters are you most like? Why?

Terri:
I’m most like Claire from my second book, A Sheltering Love.

Me: How did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Terri: I’ve wanted to be a writer since junior high school English class. I discovered how much fun it was to get the stories in my head on to paper. It took until my late twenties before I actually did anything about it.

Me: Tell me about your inspirational romantic suspense novel RANSOM.

Terri:

 “WE HAVE YOUR SISTER.”

Liz Cantrell is terrified when she receives a call from a man holding her newlywed sister captive—and she’s convinced her sketchy brother-in-law’s involved. Willing to pay any price for her sister’s freedom, Liz flies to Niagara Falls with the ransom: an uncut diamond necklace worth millions. But the moment she lands, a handsome, world-weary Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent takes her into custody.

Blake Fallon’s determined to catch a ruthless diamond smuggler—and the pretty antiques dealer trying to save her sister could be just the break his case needs. But as they team up to rescue Liz’s sister and trap the criminal mastermind, a desperate standoff will threaten everything they hold precious—including their lives.

Northern Border Patrol: Keeping the US-Canada border safe.

Me: Share with us a favorite paragraph or two from your newest release. Why do you love this paragraph? What makes it special to you?

Terri: What I like about this because it lays out what is at stake and what needs to happen. Trust is a big issue for these two.

Blake vowed to take Santini down if it was the last thing he did. And this woman was the key to Blake’s revenge and redemption. He just needed her cooperation.

“Why should I trust you?” Liz asked with skepticism lacing each word.

Blake stared her in the eye and flattened his hands on the table. “You have no choice if you want to see your sister again. In order for us to succeed, we have to trust each other.”
