Author on the Couch: Mary Corrales

This week’s Author on the Couch is…

Mary Corrales

GIVEAWAY! Mary is giving away a copy of her paranormal/fantasy erotic romance Sindriel.

Me: Tell me about an experience that had a profound impact on your life.

Mary: I’d have to say my mom telling me stories when I was little. Most were stories of little kids like me and their adventures. Those stories led me to reading books and she always indulged my love of books. She’s the real reason I love reading and writing.

Me: What personality trait of yours helps you most as an author?

Mary: Creativity. Whether I’m world building or drafting a cover letter for an employment opportunity, I’m able to find the best use of words for the job. It’s how I can take words to express an idea, thought, moment or scene that really gives me a sense of satisfaction when I get it right.

Me: What personality trait of yours hinders you most as an author?

Mary: I procrastinate. You have no idea how clean my house gets when I’m supposed to be writing. *grin*

Me: What was your high point as a writer—a time when you were happiest, on cloud nine, flying high? What happened?

Mary: I think the highest time was when I published my first book. So many friends at work bought Dhampir Passions that I did an impromptu book signing at the office Christmas party.

Me: What was your low point as a writer—a time when questioned your path, a time when you felt really crappy about your writing? What happened? How did you get over it?

Mary: My lowest was when one of my publishers closed up, and writer friends left writing. It became a little lonely for me. I overcame it when I found great people on Twitter and participated in the writer memes. Those keep me going.

Me: If you had to pick a mental disorder to have for only one day (purely for writer research purposes), which one would you choose? Why?

Mary: I think I’d choose Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. There is so much to understand about it and I believe that if someone could truly understand PTSD that maybe it could be treated better and even prevented. Maybe I’m naïve but I just believe there is more that can be done if we understand how the mind works. Those who suffer from PTSD deserve the best of care and the commitment it takes to find better treatment methods.

Me: Name a writing pet peeve of yours. Something that hits you like fingernails-on-a-chalkboard every time you see it. Why does it bug you?

Mary: I can’t stand head-hopping. It really just pulls me out of the story when I jump to another characters thoughts. I find it hard to finish books written in this manner. I was required by my publishers to write in a cleaner manner and it’s paid off for me in the creation of better stories.

Me: What do you collect? Why? What personal meaning does this item have for you?

Mary: I collect nutcrackers. Not the theme ones like firefighter nutcrackers but those traditional to the story. The first time I watched the Nutcracker ballet on tv, I fell in love with the story. It’s romantic, and full of fantasy. It’s the perfect love story. A magical representation of a hero and heroine and the adventure of falling in love. I suppose it speaks to my belief in true love.

Me: Tell me about your paranormal fantasy erotic romance novel Sindriel.

Mary: Miranda Contreras never thought a bad choice in men could cause her to lose her soul. She must now call upon on a demon bargainer for help. Demon bargainer and Lord of the Crimson Shroud, Sindriel, always bargains to his own benefit. What will he take from Miranda as payment for his assistance? Miranda’s life soon becomes one of hell realms and dangerous pleasures. Will she regain her soul but lose her chance at true love?

Me: Share an excerpt with us.

Mary: Sindriel watched the woman rise out of the swimming pool, naked as a goddess in heat, and feared he’d signed his own demise.

He stared, unable to think. Had he conjured her? For a moment, the stupidity of hope held him immobile.

Her lush curves and pale caramel-cream skin shimmered in the moonlight. Her long, dark hair curled over wet, peaked nipples and trailed down to her waist. She looked ripe for a night of pleasure with a demon like him. It was not, however, her body, but her identity, that shook him.

Miranda was the supplicant.

Oh, the nights he’d dreamed of seeing this woman naked and desirous for him. Too bad these circumstances were not to his liking. What fresh hell brought her to him in this manner?

He left the deeper shadows of the backyard trees and stepped into the moonlight.

Miranda stared at him with wide, surprised eyes but then gave a loud cough that might have destroyed his goddess fantasy, as if her identity hadn’t done that already. That was the trouble with the summoning ritual. One never saw the face of the supplicant.

Her mouth hung open in amazement even as she tried to cover herself with her hands. “Sindriel,” she squeaked.

“Miranda,” he murmured.

Me: Share with us a favorite paragraph from Sindriel. Why do you love this paragraph? What makes it special to you?

Mary: “How dare you treat me like some bimbo panting after you for what’s in your pants! I’ll tell you one thing; I decide what this will be for me. If I want to remember you with a smile, then I will. Don’t try and tell me how to feel about you. And just so you know,” she said poking him in the chest with her finger, “I’m keeping the happy memories of you from the wedding too. I may not be some badass demon, but at least I know my own mind and heart. Do you?”

I love this paragraph because it’s the moment when my heroine, Miranda really stands up what she wants in her life and what she wants is the hero, Sindriel. I love the courage and challenge she’s throwing out to him. I was proud of her bravery and his response is pure Sindriel deliciousness.

With a slow grin, he lifted a hand causing the entire room and all its furnishings to disappear. She fell on her sweet little ass with an audible gasp. “Now, about the question of whether I know my own mind. Look around you. This is my bedroom. This is where I want you, so this will now be where you stay.”
